Textio services are used by large international enterprises, such as T-Mobile, Uber, Nasdaq, Cisco and Oracle; as well as public organizations - National Health Service (UK), Australia’s Department of Education and Canada Revenue Agency.
The challenge
COVID-era hiring in the US and UK was costly and slow and previous attempts at overseas hiring hadn’t integrated smoothly with their teams. Textio’s product required Natural Language Processing (NLP) expertise – a skillset that’s tough to find and essential for their new features.
As a relatively small and already established company they needed to move fast, keep costs down and minimize risk. They needed a reliable dev team that could not only build a complex product but also align with their standards and established processes.
Creating inclusive results requires AI models based on rigorous scientific research and enriched with diverse datasets to avoid bias and ensure reliability. Achieving this balance between technological innovation and social responsibility is not a trivial task. Quantifying the "quality" of something as nuanced as a job ad or performance feedback involves navigating subjective interpretations, cultural contexts and the lack of standardized metrics.
The solution
Textio hired us to be that remote yet integrated team – experts in NLP, backend development and frontend work – capable of scaling their development fast and effectively. We started with 3 FTEs, including a team lead, NLP specialist, backend and frontend devs, all working directly within Textio’s teams. Today, our team has grown to 6 FTEs, responsible for 25% of their dev capacity.
Used to fast, lean startup projects we adapted to Textio’s slower, quality-focused agile approach. Our team closely collaborates with their designers and follows their well polished UI library for a seamless product experience.
We didn’t just build features – we streamlined processes. For example, we took on their CI pipeline, simplifying deployment from 40 minutes to seconds and moved the infrastructure from serverless and managed systems to a simple hosted solution - including the power hungry AIs - lowering the infrastructure bill by over $80000 the first year.
